After a long day at the laboratory, she comes back home. Facts of molecular biology crowd her mind. And then, she takes off her white lab coat and her crocs, and with a click of a button enters her parallel world of styling new outfits, planning photoshoots and writing posts. This is Tatjana Mallano, molecular biologist by day, and fashion blogger by night, whose life for the past year has revolved between two lenses—the microscope and the camera.
Tatjana started her blog ‘T by Mallano’ in March 2016, which was triggered after googling the phrase, ‘Karen Millen pleated dress on Real Women.’“As a petite woman,” she says, “I’ve always struggled with finding garments”. Real women—those are the words that inspired Tatiana, and keep her motivated, for it is the world of fashion blogging that leaves behind the unreal models to bring out the ‘real women’ girls with all races an body proportions, sharing their outfits while living an ordinary lifestyle. “Fashion bloggers have changed the image of fashion industry,” Tatjana says.
For the molecular biologist and her husband Max, an Optical Engineer, who is the person behind the camera, managing the blog has been a learning curve. “We learnt how to set up a WordPress and basic photography skills through YouTube Tutorial videos!” says Tatiana. But all of it was worth it, simply because being able to don a different version of herself, stepping out of her comfort zone and meet people around the world makes her genuinely happy. “Diving into photography and starting my blog, half-way through my doctoral studies has been the wisest decision I ever took in order to preserve my mental health and the core of my personality,” she says. Tatjana strives to maintain the novice’s innocence on her blog by staying true to her belief, personal style and by not following mainstream fashion blogging. With that, she breaks the monotony of her long hours of academic research, secluded lifestyle, repeated conversations and lack of creativity.

Tatjana and her husband manage the high quality post and photographs on the blog, but it is the writing that brings her to a space she was only slightly familiar with. “Storytelling and writing had been my passion since I was a child.” But with academia, she feels her native language, grammatical errors are common and sentences may be short. But that has not deterred her from writing from her own perspective, with a voice and style which is solely hers. “People often comment on my blog and how much they enjoy the photography”, Tatjana says, “But the comments that i really hold close to my heart, are the ones in concern with my writing.”
Science and fashion blogging are Tatjana’s two great loves, co-existing beautifully. “I wouldn’t imagine myself doing exclusively one or another,”she says. Tatjana’s day is only complete when she move from one lens to the other, from microscopic organisms on a slide to printed dresses, warm sunshine and a radiant smile, with a generous dose of travel and beautifully penned down words. Who said academics are boring?
